Autumn Flowers FAQs
What colours are good in an Autumn arrangement?
The colours most associated with autumn are yellow, orange, red and brown – that's what we see in nature as the leaves on the trees go through their life cycle. However, don't feel limited by this – as the days get colder and the nights draw in, cooler hues are also appropriate this season. Deep pinks and purple look stunning in the fading light of the day as you cosy up for the evening.
What flowers are Autumnal?
It's a misconception that everything goes to sleep in Autumn to prepare for winter, but there are some flowers where this just isn't true. For example, chrysanthemums come in to their own at the end of summer and in to Autumn, providing a cushion of colour in any fall flower arrangement.
The long tendrils of amaranthus are also in season, providing plush fluffy textures to arrangements in the gorgeous deep magenta hue they are known for.
And of course, we couldn't forget the flowers in the Dianthus family like the carnation, and sweet williams. Their genus name comes from the Greek dios for 'god-like', and anthos meaning 'flower'. We see what the Greeks were going with when they named it!
What flowers symbolise Autumn?
There aren't flowers that specifically mean Autumn, but anything blooming during Dutumn is a great choice. If you're looking for something more metaphorical, pick an arrangement with the Autumn-flowering aster. This flower holds symbolic meanings of 'farewell' and 'wisdom' which could be associated with this season.
