The East Midlands town of Northampton is the county town of Northamptonshire, built on the River Nene. Much of the town was destroyed in the so-called ‘Great Fire of Northampton’ in 1675, but it was rebuilt and Northampton became renowned for its shoe and leather industry. It’s noted for having the largest market square in England, but it didn’t manage to achieve city status when it applied in 2000.
