Famous for being the birthplace of the modern railway, Darlington in County Durham is a historic market town on the River Skerne that’s also home to one of the north of England’s most important churches: St Cuthbert’s, founded in 1183. The Darlington Railway Centre and Museum is a popular attraction for visitors to the area, and it was through Darlington that George Stephenson’s first locomotive travelled on its first journey in 1825.
