The Essex town of Basildon came about from four villages rough together as one of the post-WWII 'new towns'. Growing from a war time population of around 1,100, its size has grown to more than 107,000. Basildon's proximity to the London Gateway port made it a desirable location for industry, and is home to the Ford Motor Company, Yardley of London, Gordon's Gin and the Carreras Tobacco Company.
